Beautiful story, thanks for sharing. Except for the missing stars, your moon looks identical to the lower one in the earlier picture. It would be great if it was the same one.

Some of the projects back in the early 1950's were in Popular Science such as this novelty item I recall my uncle making. It had people wondering how he did it for years. I included it to illustrate where one might find some novelty woodworking projects they could adapt and put a new spin on, or recreate.
Just for grins I also thought a Shopsmith Ad in the same issue might give some folks another perspective.
