Take a photo and post it so we all can learn from what you've come up with. I would think that as a horizontal boring machine, the SS could be used with an auger (short to start) and add extensions as you progress through the log. The clamp could be a simple v-grooved block of wood and a couple of c-clamps to hold it down.

Is there a tool or does someone have a jig they use. The jig I am trying to build will act as a sled so both the head stock and the jig can move to accommodate different size logs. I am using a 3/8 14" bit. Lonnie

Here's what I did for a pepper mil that is 20" long. Drilled half way from each end to get the holes to come out in both centers. In your lamp, the holes don't have to exactly match - just enough to run a power cord through. Used the lathe with a chuck and a Forster bit with two 6" extensions.

Another way to deal with that problem is to saw the long cylinder in half and rout a half hole in each side before gluing together.

I bored out a cup center to about 3/8" , chucked up my lamp stock between centers and ran a lamp auger up the middle.
I thought your title meant something like this. Hope the photo comes thru.
