I'll post on the forum pics of the springs as requested by mgdesigns.

Also, I haven't gotten to the HST yet. It's my next step. I hadn't seen those instructions. Thanks a lot for them.

Notice the last two steps are: set the speed indicator dial to fast and reattach the speed control 'knob'.

That means the indicator dial does not even need to be there, and can be merely added/set later.

Six years later, and still valuable!

Post by stilllearning »

Dear Oddie and JPG50404:

If either of you is still out there, by any chance, some six years after you originally wrote them, I've just reviewed the posts (and pictures!) regarding the different types of anti-rattle spring behind the speed control dial on the Mark V. Incredibly helpful!

I have a 1954 Greenie (still in the process of re-assembling, following a dismantle and minor restoration) with a missing anti-rattle spring. The nice lady at Shopsmith assured me on the phone that the spring for the newer models would work on the older ones, too. Of course, it's completely different, as we can see from the very helpful photos of the newer casting (with close-up shot of where the little spring inserts).

My question, finally: if I have a 1954 Greenie (with the A, casting, I think) could I drill two small hole in the casting into which I might insert the two ends of the newer anti-rattle spring?

Shopsmith no longer sells the old spring type, which mounted underneath the power switch on the earlier models.

Or should I try to find one of the old-fashioned leaf-type spring on eBay?

Any advice for someone still learning his way around the Mark V would be very much appreciated.

Hope you both are still out there somewhere, doing well, and still running your Mark Vs.

2014 - 2012 = 6???????

The 'new' spring will only work on 'B' and 'C' castings.

Finding the old spring will be a crap shoot.

They appear on e-bay, but few and far between.

The only function provided by the old type is to prevent inadvertent adjusting of the speed control to above 'saw/joint'. The 'spring' must be depressed to set the speed faster. So the SS will work just fine other than the extra step will be eliminated.

IIWM, I would put it into running condition and use it until an old spring version comes along. Need much patience!

rigging a spring for speed control dial

Post by stilllearning »

Dear JPG40504:

Sorry for the error: when I said "6 years later" I had been looking at your "join" date of 2008. My mistake.

Thank you very much, though, for the reply--and its promptness. I will keep an eye out for one of the old springs on eBay. In the meantime, I'll start working on some rigged alternatives. Looks like it just needs a light amount of spring pressure from behind, and the spring needs to be configured such that it won't grind into the back of the dial.

If I could press you with just one more question: does it matter if my rigged leaf spring doesn't fit into the groove, but instead rests on the flat area of the backside of the dial?

Either way, I'll move forward and if I come up with anything that works, I'll post a picture. I also may try to take the replacement spring (with the little roller on it), and see if I can make it work somehow. (But will hold off on drilling into the headstock casting.)

Thanks again for the help.

Please contact me off-line as I have a few of the "A" headstock speed control springs available. I stock rebuilt parts for the Gilmer drive headstocks along with bearings but no belts. I just put 6 "A" headstock casings in my truck this week for the salvage yard trip.

I may have a spring in my 'pile'. If interested, you may email me at the address below and I will check.

Re: Another Speed Control Issue/Question

Post by oddie »

Now it is 6 years later.

I have an additional Greenie. The P.O. had made it into a shorty to fit into his small shop. I rebuilt it with a B headstock and other parts from here and there. I use it as a sanding station so the speeds I used were midrange. So I never ran it through the entire speed range. Until yesterday.

There was a problem(s). The dial would not enter either the high or low ranges. So I took the whole speed control setup out. And in all the tinkering I realized I had yet another speed indicator ring (or was it the same ring?) where the groove on the back had squared ends, not an end with a taper. So does anyone have a “good” speed indicater ring I can buy?

The other problem is I took out the setscrew from the speed controller so now the calibration is gone and I have to start over. I’m really looking forward to that.😣

From an "A" headstock model. Yes Virginia there were two versions.

Any later version should work.

Recalibrating the ring is an easy task. See 'high speed adjustment'.

Wanna trade the squared one for a tapered one? :)

If so PM me.
