I agree, Jury Rigged is not a fair description.
FWIW a mini can be made from one pair of tubes(one pair way tubes, or one pair of bench tubes) thus saving the other pair for possible future use.
Just cut them 3/8" off the center producing one 'half' 3/4" longer than the other 'half'. The longer two become the mini's bench tubes etc.

I have had the same dilemma. I have 2 mark Vs and 3 headstocks, one is not running yet but I think I can have it up and going soon. I'm not too keen on selling a headstock on eBay, packing it and shipping it, so I think I will list my extra working headstock on Craig's list and repair the other one and either sell it as a complete SS or cut it down. I'm still up in the air about mini versus shorty. Having a carrage and tilting table would make sanding compound miters possible among many other things.

I am thinking of making a mini with my single bearing quil for my jointer. That way I don't have to lift it off the shelf, just roll it out.
