I did check on that recall sometime back. With my usual luck My Craftsman was not one involved...
I've had 3 radial saws and on each of them had the same problem. (over length sentence follows
I often considered making a support hoop overhead anchored to the back of the base to help brace the outer end of the arm.
My compound miter saw anchors out front onto sort of a hoop rather than back at the pivot point like a RAS.
