I have to say I know little about electrical work. My friend who gave me the Shopsmith and helped take the headstock off brought over some kind of meter do-hickey. It had a hand held unit with two probes coming from it. We first stuck the probes into the socket and that read 120v. We then plugged the Shopsmith in and he took the two probes and put them on the leads to the motor and that showed the motor was getting power, and then he put them on the leads for the switch, and it showed it was getting power. Don't know if it is the same thing as an Ohm Meter, and is the same test, but that is what we have done so far for testing electrical. He also had this pen like thing that if you put it close to a power cord that is plugged in, if there is power going through the cord, the pen lights up. We also ran this over the power cord, motor and switch and it lit up each time.
Today I made a little progress with cleaning things out. Since I have vacuumed up all the dust that will vacuum, I decided to put the shop vac hose on the blower portion of my shop vac. Good thing I was wearing a dust mask. Too bad I didn't think to take the headstock outside the shop. I blew it out and then there was a huge cloud of dust. I did finish blowing outside. That did pretty good at getting most of the dust out. Now it looks like what is left is just a little bit of dust mixed with oil on all the gear and spindle teeth. I have Nick's instructions for cleaning and lubricating the different parts. One thing though it says to use a 2" wide by 18" long board with a one inch hole drilled in the middle to use to compress the spring on the motor. How important is the measurement of that board? Can any board atleast wide enough and with enough length for pushing leverage be just fine?
I also took this time to find the serial number and such. Serial number indicates that atleast the headstock is from 1985. The markings say "ShopSmith, Inc." and "Mark V - B". Also it does say it is a 1 1/8hp motor.
