Welcome to the forum and to the world of sawdust and glue.:)
Ditto! Look in that big container, one is probably in thar!

BTW the upper shaft coupler is installed reversed end for end. The skinny end faces the headstock.

Here is a pic of my first project underway.
Bed for son

Also I have acquired my second ss. Can anyone give me a hint as to what year it is. Picked it up locally of craigslist for 150. Motor runs but speed changer doesn't. Once this rain gets out of here, I'll try to get some better pics. (its in the back of my truck covered, not in the rain).
SS # 2

Also, I bought a coupler off ebay. I was able to get the jointer working. So far I have the saw blade, disk sander, jointer, lathe chisels and spurs and a faceplate, all the smaller accessories (push sticks board hold downs) the only thing im missing is the drill chuck.

The new ss only has the saw blade and no other attachments.

Since per the sticker that one is definitely a Mark V, I have to assume from the serial # that it is a '79 (?):
http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/serialnumber.htm

When you say it won't change speeds, do you mean it operates at one speed and you can't turn the speed adjustment dial? I don't know much about working on the headstocks but my guess is you should start opening it up as much as possible and cleaning and lubing where feasible. I'm sure others here can provide you with much clearer direction on where to go next. You mentioned it only has the saw - does this include the main table (I hope) and auxiliary table?

If it does turn out to indeed be a '79, I have all the original literature that came with mine when it was purchased new (by my Dad) - let me know if interested and I could scan this stuff. It has lists of everything that was included, all available accessories at the time etc.

I'd say Sam is correct. First it looks like a date code, second it is a sticker and stickers weren't used until he late 80's or early 90's. It appears that model # is a 500.
