As you look at the various auctions for these miter gauges, note that the hold down/safety grip has changed a bit over time, primarily having to do with how the hold down screw is adjusted. The older ones had a knurled nut on top of the bolt, while the newer ones have a big wing nut with black plastic wings on it. I'm not sure there's a lot of difference but thought you might want to know in case you have a preference.

Also, make sure you get one for a 500 and not a 510 or 520 - the difference is the 510 and 520 have a t-slot for the miter bar, which has spring-loaded wheels that fit in the t-slots. The 500 is just a rectangular bar with no t-slot wheels - the 510/520 miter gauge won't fit on your 500. Most folks note the model # in their descriptions and/or you can tell by the photos.

The 510/520 bars have the 't-slot washer', but it can be removed(a single screw) for use in a earlier model(and belt sander etc.).

I also placed a bid on the tailstock from the same guy who put up the miter gauge. Basically right now my shopsmith is nothing more than a very large disk sander and bandsaw. I need a drill chuck, miter gauge, rip fence(did find one with a good bid now price), auxillary table for the end, saw arbor, tailstock, and all the centers and plates for lathe turning. Only thing the shopsmith came with was the base, the headstock, saw table, disk sander, and bandsaw attachment. I also have quite a few lathe chisles, both Shopsmith and Buck Bros., from the original owner, just no lathe parts.
