These are multi-purpose tools, afterall. It's not like you're cutting the dash in a 69 Camero to put a cheap stereo in!

The Arduino package is amazingly cost effective. The language and specific interest groups have tons of free online libraries where you can just copy the code. This could be fun. There has to be a catch somewhere. I can see the cost factor for the modules that are available but not for the software/firmware. I gotta find out about what it costs to those modules first.

I stated the concern part because I have experienced that before by hardliners and when I succeeded all sorts of hell broke out. I just left that forum.
I don't think you will find that happening here. (If you start cutting the way tubes some might get concerned...) The 10ER I'm restoring is being done in bright cartoon colors, what I like may not be every ones cup of tea either.
The table is one item I am changing. I am adding 1/3 more surface area. I am going to add mounts and add the capability for a routing table.
The routing table has been done, I seem to recall two versions being posted here at one time or other. It might be worth your time to search the old posts to see what has been done and how it worked out.
I am adding small level indicators on all 4 side.
I guess you lost me on the levels. "Level" is not concept for use of this sort of machine if you are planning to level the table as that will do nothing for you wood working wise. May be I'm misunderstanding your intent?
I am adding a cross hatch groove network on the top of the table so it can become part of my "Lego" concept. Example being of this is I will fabric many ABS squares that match the footprint of the table. In 1 square I am going to embed a bearing bed. I will then place it over the table with the cross hatch grooves to "interlock" them. I just lower the table till I am level and Viola, I have surface that can help with maneuvering large material.
Sorry again I'm lost. I need to see some sketches I guess. I get lost even more when I start adding a miter gauge or rip fence....
I was actually thinking of adding another table just for the conveinance of more surface area at the working level.
Another idea everybody might be interested in is a very simple Digital Tach to verify your RPM. It will be very small in foot print and in the actual pulley cover. I am using the open source Arduino kits to build this. It will be very easy to apply to your machine and can take quite the beating.
Several people have built and some even sell this sort of thing, I simply purchased a optical one off ebay for about $13 including shipping. It works fine but I don't find it of a lot of use. Unless you have the speed changer you are working with fixed pulleys and there is a chart which tells you the rpm depending on your setup. In woodworking a couple of hundred rpm isn't a big deal.
There will have to be periodic maintenance but nothing absurd. just clean the lens and change the battery once the power light starts blinking our out all together.
I have a plethora of ideas and I know i will only incorporate 2% of them
The pictures I do have now need to be re-sized real quick for proper attachment. Just give me a day or so.

Man! thank you. First thing I do is sketch out everything. I have about 9 iterations as of now. I have to go through the process weeding out the frivolous so I have a good plan of attack once the 10ER is ready for re assembling and then fabrication. Skip also has some utube videos to watch, it will give you an idea of what has already been done and might let you work on "new" areas not yet touched on by anyone.
As so far as problems with the original it depends on what you want to do with it. If you cut small things then a larger table is not needed. If you want to have a longer lathe bed then guess what, someone has already done it. Speed range is limited by the original pulley setup but a speed change can be had that fixes that pretty much, want more then go to a DC motor and yes you can buy that setup as well. Problems with a machine that is 60 years old have for the most part been solved either by upgrades or add-on's.
I know it is a new toy and you want to play and explore just make sure you keep it safe.

Arduino is so easy to work with. it does not matter your skills. programming is much less complicated than C++.dusty wrote:Hmmm, gotta know the programming language too.
A little browsing and I find that it is done in C++. Would you not know. I learned Pascal and then touched on C. Not C++ but C. I don't even have the code manuals anymore.
