As far as I know, you can't have your finish and keep your smell too (Like having your cake and eating it too). The exception being the recommendation to leave some of it (interior) unfinished.

As for keeping the color, the only thing I have seen work that keeps the color (and strengthens a (IMO) weak wood) is polyurethane.

Admittedly, I haven't seen this piece in probably two years now. Guess I need to go to the coffee shop I sold it too and see if the color is holding up.

'55 Greenie #292284 (Mar-55), '89 SS 510 #020989, Mark VII #408551 (sold 10/14/12), SS Band Saw, (SS 500 #36063 (May-79) now gone to son-in-law as of 11-11), Magna bandsaw, Magna jointer 16185 (May-54), Magna belt sander SS28712 (Dec-82), Magna jigsaw SS4397 (Dec-78), SS biscuit joiner, Zyliss (knockoff) vise, 20+ hand planes, 60s Craftsman tablesaw, CarbaTec mini-lathe, and the usual pile of tools. Hermit of the Hills Woodworks, a hillbilly in the foothills of the Ozarks, scraping by.

This is one of the cedar chests built from cedar. The inside is unfinished to retain the aroma. The outside is finished with urethane to enhance the color of the wood.

Good looking chest ! the wood I have is no where near that dark...:mad:

This wood was not nearly that colorful either until the polyurethane was applied. You might be surprised how colorful your wood is with a good coating.
