Advice Sought: MK V 500 vs 10ER

I love the MK5 for many things, but I really prefer the 10er for lathe work. The weight gives it a much more solid feel with less vibration. I use a speedchanger as well, so my rpm's at the low end are lower than with the MK5 because I don't have a speed reducer for it. I also have less trouble getting the tool rest tight & solid on the 10er. Quiet too.

Thanks for those thoughts. I agree, the MKV can get annoyingly loud at higher RPMs.

TGT: Do you have any time on a dedicated lathe to which you can compare the 10ER.

This line of thinking came up when I ran across a Craigslist posting for a 10ER, no speed changer, w/jig saw, not sure what else, pretty clean looking, for $700 .

By at least ~$500-600! That's about twice what I paid for my 500. Yeah, they are pretty proud of it (to be fair, the pics make it look real clean, little/no rust, good paint--don't know if maintained that way or recently cleaned & painted). I have no interest in evening talking to the seller at that kind of asking price.

I had a used ER when living north of Tulsa. Used it for 20+years, but sold it when we moved to Phoenix area. Here I got a used model V.
One wrote about the noise level, and I agree the ER was quieter, evan with exposed belts. And had it on a custom bench to elevate it, am same height
(6,1).
My shop is only 200 square feet, so SS is main tool. Love the extended worktops so only need wife's help when ripping 4x8 sheets, ER did not have enough!
Wished I had my old ER back.

I hope to have my 2nd 10ER restoration remounted on it's stand this week and will be trying it out turning some bowls and see how it compares to my 520 PowerPro. It doesn't have a speed changer yet, but does have a two speed motor. Be interesting to see if the slow speed settings will have enough power to round out my 15" stock. There are several speed changers on E-bay with buy-it-now prices of $125 and up I will report back my impressions of how the 10ER compares with the 520 in lathe mode.

Thanks for sharing your 10ER experience. Did you do much lathe work on the ER? My shop is a bit smaller, about 192 square feet, and pretty full.

I started buying into several EurekaZone products 2 or 3 years ago at first for breaking down sheet goods but later for almost all cuts. I haven't used a tablesaw since (gave mine away) while getting better quality cuts, feel much safer, and can do all by myself. I'll probably pick up the new Universal Edge Guide for even better sheet good ripping. When done, I can break the track down and put the long pieces on hangars on my rafters.

I'm looking forward to your report. If I switch, I'll have to seriously consider a variable speed DC motor replacement.
