As long as I can tell what it is, have a reasonable idea as to the condition before burning gas, and the price is reasonable I am OK. I'd rather have a reasonably priced turd of an ad than a professional seller asking $4500.
The problem is there is never enough information to determine if it is a good deal. Which usually means rounds of picture or description requests. A picture says a 1,000 words - please post a picture of the other items.
The ads usually mention a planer, which can be assumed to be a jointer. Once in a while there is the "and other stuff". "Other stuff", like what? SPTs, bits, accessories, box of wood cutoffs and junk? My first 510 was bought for a reasonable amount and the guy kept trying to clean his garage. He threw in some useful items like pipe clamps and some weird stuff like wood cutoffs and a board with nails sticking out of it.
Just bought a project machine, which will be the newest machine I own. Picture was on the main machine, didn't show accessories or other items. Listing includes SPTs which were gone by the time I was contacted, but the listing was never updated to reflect that. It needed just a little work and the speed dial was run up and down "just last week." Funny since the button bearing that connects the speed control to the sheaves was broken and the clip was sitting in a box of stuff.
Hoping the motor which hums is just pinched by the sheaves. Going to need to replace at a minimum the button bearing, speed control, belts and maybe the motor. I have my original 500 that I can always swap out the parts or headstock, although I do like the safety switch with kids around. For what I paid I got my value in the tables and accessories although that saw guard always seems to be missing.

I'm guilty of that, if you want to call it guilt. I might have odds and ends that go with something I am selling that I will no longer have any use for once the item is sold. Example being spare parts for a car. I'm not charging extra, its a bonus if the buyer wants it and I delay being on hoarders by another day.

Yeah, it really didn't look like a bad deal at all. Despite being the "Mark IV." I'd check it out if it were local.

I seriously doubt he has a thickness planer, what do you think he is actually referring to?
My guess is just the shaper/dado arbor.

It looks like "Mark IV" machines are popping up all over. Here's one near me that bears an uncanny resemblance to a 10ER. ]

I haven't seen any steals on 10ER's for quite some time, and I'm starting to get the bug. What do you guys think of the asking price for this one?
get it before the price drops further

Here's one in my neck of the woods that has been reposted:

At least the poster is right in his description. It is a Shopsmith, albeit it is an old 10ER. And he posted five pics, although I'm not sure they really help evaluate the item.
It originally posted a few weeks earlier asking $500!!
Even at $300 I think he's about $250 high. IMHO

Here's a local classic - hope you support the left side of the cutoff if you are taking more than 2 inches off that board. Can't imagine cutting plywood. Also the safety guard doesn't look like it can move and limits the size of that plywood you are cutting. Is that a safety chain like some people have on their wallets?

Here is a high quality listing that everyone should aspire to do. He has rotors and everything is craftsman, except for the planer. The heading says $100, but the listing says a $1000. I can picture the tools right now in my mind. Selling everything he owns too.

Well, it it appears that someone did like the price - $200 for what looked like an unsually clean and rust-free one with casters. The thing had been posted for weeks, with posting date updated daily. Now it be gone. Congrats to whomever!
There was one with a speed changer posted at a similar price a few months ago. I probably should have snagged that one, but I still haven't quite figured out how to shoehorn another SS into my shop.
EDIT: it turned out that the ad was taken down by the author just because he reposts it every day. Here's the link du jour:

When I think if mechanics tools, I think Stanley and Skil
I bet money all this NIB stuff was in a tote for stocking and it migrated to someone's trunk before going on the shelves.

I suppose that is possible but have you ever been in the stock room of an operation like "Overstock". I worked with a gentleman who purchased overstocked items in bulk and re marketed them on eBay. Some of what he had for sale looked a lot like this.

I haven't seen an overstock place, so you are probably right.
I'm a natural born skeptic. I remember when I was parts manager at Pep Boys, we had several kids that were VERY good at stealing without getting caught red handed. Eventually one of them stole one of the wheel balancers from the shop and we finally got em
It's sad that my mind always goes to the worst possible answer first
