I was looking at that thing last night and thinking to myself that it probalby wasn't too hard to do. When I think that, I've usually missed something, so I set it down for the night and asked today. I'm glad I did.

It is not hard. It is just capable of causing you to cuss and bleed a little. I was told to wear gloves but I cannot do that. I must be able to feel what I am handling.

Sounds good. I move the snap ring out onto the threads, pull the housing out about a 1/8"-1/4" gap and spray around the opening with a silicone spray lubricant. I hand work the housing on the shaft to free up any crud that may be trapped between the housing and shaft, then drain any excess lubricant out of the housing. Do this away from any woodworking surfaces. This helps remove any prior noise from the spring assembly.

This appears to be working pretty well. The spring is intact and provides plenty of tension. Rotational motion is much smoother, and all drag appears to be gone. I soaked the ends in evaporust; they've cleaned up nicely!

Now if I could just get that quill bearing back on the shaft
