The one I made has saw kerfs. The plans that I referenced give you that as a detail, see below:

I mounded it with east exposure, about 12 feet high. We do have bats in the area as we see them feasting by the street lights from time to time. I've check under the house for guano but never found any...

I know this is an old topic, but I assisted one of our local Boy Scouts with making bat houses for his Eagle Project. He is constructing and mounting 6 of them for his school in order to control the mosquito population in the area. The prototype is pictured.

Now that is a nice looking bat house build wise! Will bats think so?

I finally took mine down, never had any bats take up residence. I now have a Winegard SquareShooter where the bat house use to be.

I'd like to get some bats living here but for what ever reason they were not impressed with my house.

Over the last few years we see fewer and fewer bats here. The food source is certainly here in our yard, in abundance now after the last rains. Maybe the neighbors are doing more abatement? We have had several abatement companies reps stopping in to see my no soliciting sign but ignoring it. New business opportunity abound in a free county, now if we could only teach people to read and understand.

I'll have see and report if the bats actually move in. There is a local library that actually has 2 two bat houses on the property and they are holding bats. More to follow...

I think the bat population is really being effected adversely with this " White Nose" syndrome.
They are finding huge caves with almost total devastation of the bat population due to it.

Neighbor has two bat boxes which were heavily used. Then bats started to die not sure what their status is now.

I was just looking at some information about bat decline, some thing called "White-nose syndrome" seems especially lethal and may account for some of the decline here in IL. You can read about it here:

http://www.biologicaldiversity.org/news ... -2013.html

I know we use to take a evening walk and see a few flying about under the street lights, attracted by the bugs that are attracted by the light no doubt. Now we don't see any at all or perhaps one on the same walk at the same locations. Not a good sign.

I found this location with some pointers to why the bats may have not liked my house.

Maybe its time for me to look in to a build again....... rather be doing that then a lot of other stuff I have to do.
