510 outfeed table

This is my very first attempt at an OFT. It too was a cantilevered version. It works but is cumbersome. It worked really well on the project that it was built for. I did a project that sed a lot of sheet goods.

Time is in short supply for me (full time property claims supervisor and graduate student) but money I have some of... So the question, Is there any reason why I couldn't pick up a 510 main table used and a set of these brackets from SS, then add a support rod similar to yours that mounts to the bottom of the main table support tube and to the bottom of the main table extension? If so do you have any thoughts on attaching the end that reaches to the bottom of the extension table? Also, you have discussed dimensions, centering the bracket on the extension with the pivot on the main table, do you have those worked out now where the table will tilt without the end dropping or raising but staying in plane with the main table?

If time is an issue, my I bolt/angle iron setup probably only took about an hour or so to put together. There's not much to it.claimdude wrote:Dusty,

My dad's 1951 10er, 2 more 10er's, same vintage, a Goldie MK5, a 510 shortie with 34inch tubes, bandsaw, jointer, jigsaw, belt sander, a ton of small SS goodies and still looking...you just can't have enough Shopsmith stuff

I have not attempted developing an OFT using the main table but I see no reason why it could not be done.
As for attaching the diagonal support to the main table, I have done that either but I would do it much the same way as I did on my last OFT. Pictures are posted on the forum.
Yes, I have resolved the issue of varying OFT height. Just make certain that the diagonal support bar attaches to the under side of the OFT at a point that is exactly, repeat - exactly, in line with the Main Table pivot point.
To see the Main Table pivot point simply remove the table insert, stand in the operators position and tilt the main table back and forth. The pivot point is right there in front of you. Deviation from that line will result in some sort of unwanted movement of the OFT when you tilt. What the unwanted movement will be I am unable to predict.
PS: I just realized that with the main table being used as an OFT, the trunnion bolt holes very well define the location of the pivot line. I little fine tuning built into the mount and you should be able to get dead on.

Thanks Dusty, I think you had mentioned laying the main table and OFT upside down to locate the pivot point. Does the block where the pole is attached to the bottom of the table need to be a certain thickness or is that measurement irrelevant as long as I am dead on the pivot line? The thickness of that block really depends on how you attach to it. On my latest version, I am back to a ball joint sort of arrangement and I made the block fairly thick. I'll post pictures later.
If you get the diagonal support positioned correctly, the diagonal need not be adjustable. If you are a bit off...well, adjustment would be nice. I got lucky this last time around.
Actually, I located the pivot line, carried it all the way around the OFT so that I had it in front of me with the tables upside down on the bench, and I then located the block on the pivot line at a point dictated by the length of the diagonal support. I glued it in place and then held my breathe until I could mount everything and check.
PS: I was looking at the thread and realized that there is another critical detail. The block into which the diagonal support bar inserts is as thick as it is in the photo because the ball joint must also be at the same height as the pivot joint. Literally, the ball joint must be inline with the "Main Table Pivot Line" (horizontally and vertically). The block DOES NOT need to be as large as the one shown. I made this as large as it is because I did not know for sure. The two bolt holes could be elonged and the bracket would be adjustable (to correct height deviation). Thankfully that was not necessary.
