Seems to me, those would really be a sawdust/chip catcher. Need some air pressure to blow them out frequently!

I have one of these toward the left front of my bench. I put it there many years ago and I use it frequently for hand planes. They work well and much better than the dropped in wooden pins I also have for such things. The teeth do bite into the wood a tiny bit which helps. They were made of zink so they would not destroy a plane iron if you hit it.
Mounting is no big deal... A drop of oil on the threads keeps it working with your fingers.
