Perhaps they just got lots of response and ran out before they got to me...oh well, lets just hope this doesn't take as long as the band saw table extension I'm still waiting on from 7+ months ago...
Previous 'discussions' have included the prognostication that SS runs a special to get enough 'demand' so as to procure a larger volume or meet a minimum order quantity from their vendors.

Well, I just received a shipping confirmation for the backordered curved tool rest...that is definitely the shortest backorder period I've ever had with SS. It was so quick (I just received the main order yesterday) that I would have been fine with them waiting and shipping it all at once to save SS the shipping $$...I guess they must not have known how quick it would be when they backordered the item.

fredsheldon wrote:The problem I have with the UTR is that it gets in the way of the headstock when turning large bowls and keeps the work too far away from the tail stock live center. I had to purchase two extenders and there's still not enough room between my work the the tail stock to position my tool rest to turn the inside of the bowl. Part of the problem is my Lift Assist is in the way of the UTR base. I even had to ride the base up and over the bracket but it still prevents the URT from moving closer to the tail stock.

This problem is one that has frustrated me for a while. I understand you don't want to show the weaknesses of your product, but its a little lame that this issue was not mentioned in any of the manuals for the UTR that I have seen. Seems like SS should have shipped extensions as a part of the kit.
Of course, maybe this will be enough motivation to adapt a delta or similar tailstock to the SS like a few other folks have done.

You know of more than one?

I think these two nicely done ones are described somewhere here on the forum:

OK! There are two. I agree 'nicely done'.
The second one was on e-bay.

There are likely others we do not know about.

So have folks had problems with the UTR that are not using the lift-assist or other accessories that interfere? I don't use the lift assist so am hoping this will be a worthy upgrade over the stock tool rest.

My only problem was with the lift assist, and in my case, I was able to work around the issue I was having. I like the added weight and I was also able to use it on my 10ER along with my Mark V/7's. It is a nice upgrade.

Thanks for the input - it's still sitting in it's box waiting for me to finish repainting and reassembling my Mark V, so haven't had a chance to give it a test drive but I look forward to doing so.
