My Version of a Performax

this is just what the doctor ordered! i have been sick since i missed a new looking Jet 16-32 for $300 on CL a couple weeks ago. I really need a drum sander for thicknessing veneers made from figured wood so I think I will give this a try! I had thought about it but was wondering what would happen if the peice was grapped up by the drum without a feed table being thought about. I guess now we know lol. I might have to figure out a way to incorprate a holddown sled fixture.

I already have a thickness sander so I'm not in the market for making one but I have made a sand flee sort of sander using PVC pipe, velcro, bearing blocks etc. If you want to see that build you can go to:

It is a few pages long with some side trips but might be worth looking at to see how I did some of the parts of the project which could also be used if one wanted to make a thickness sander or the sand flee type sander.

Looks like a good one Jerome. Maybe when I get back to Green Valley next October we can compare notes. Our sanders have a lot in common. Must be the southern Az air.

between this article and shipwright's over at lumberjocks I now feel pretty comfortable about saving myself many hundreds of dollars and building my own..thanks guys! Not only that but I may even tackle some of the other stand alone tools like a large oscillating drum sander, dual polishing wheels, 6" x 80" belt sander, and maybe even a horizontal bandsaw for resawing veneers? hmmm, that would leave me with only needing a fretsaw lol

Gonna spend my birthday at Painter's Lodge on Vancouver Is., so maybe I'll bring my gizmo to show you.

If getting the SS on the plane is too difficult, would like to get together in Green Valley.

I assume you're doing veneers. Just a warning about my gizmo--there's a lot of torque pushing the work back at you. You'd have to adjust the table to take off microscopic amounts, and perhaps mount your veneer on a more solid block with 2 faced tape to push it thru.

When is your birthday? Painter's is about three hours north of me but if you're driving from Victoria you'll go right past me.
