I have seen several cheap 520s offered in your area this year. Too far for me. I believe most buyers have been able to disassemble the Shopsmith and fit all the Shopsmith parts in some very small cars. I just needed a large hammer, a couple short 2X4s and other small tools and allen wrenches for this task.

I have not rented any Uhaul lately but found years ago, I could get what I needed locally and make the round trip for lot less money than a one way rental. I just did not tell them I was taking the uhaul out of town. They may have put milage limits on rentals these days.

On the advice of a knowledgable forum member I am considering the need to take a drive like that though. I really want at least one model 520 for my lutherie shop but they dont seem to fall into the 'good deal' category in houston. If only Ohio were closer!

I am going to look into the costs to catch the greyhound out somewhere and then rent a uhaul truck for the return trip but i think it would still be cheaper to drive the ol warhorse.
My Airsteam Sprinter based RV gets 25 mpg on the highway pulling a trailer. It has a MB 5 cyl turbocharged diesel. I like it because it has a bathroom :)

I may have to be patient for a local 520 then. I am admittedly not very good at that though lol. the searchtempest tool may help me find one. Like my old chevy and old guitars, there seems to be a race to buy the cheap ones to part out. I understand the need to make some cash but I finally gave up trying to find a decent chevy x cab truck to restore for the price i wanted to pay lol. I did part out a couple old ibanez guitars that i had because they were worth twice as much that way, but i felt terrible afterwards!

yeah the uhauls are a no go, they tack on extra fees if you are not going to bring it back to the same place you rented it from and most do have crazy mileage fees over a certain amount.
