So how did your wires get out from under the sleeve and into the gears(and untwisted to boot)?
I think some insulating tubing would be appropriate there.
(over both wires twisted together).

If you do the upgrade, make sure and run your wires so nothing touches them!
The re-routing should solve your problem:D . Notice in the video
http://www.shopsmith.com/shopsmithpowerpro/pp_diy.htm (1:32 to 1:45) those two wires never do touch the quill parts. Also that clip is a big help, if one is available.
