IIWM:D I would mount the 'shorty' tailstock 'below' the tilt base(where it normally goes;)) so it is removable, and add a 'leg' for the extension.
That assumes I unnerstan the stuff above(I be suspicious of gthat since I do not unnerstan why ye be drilling out the tiebar threads). All thread and turnbuckle????
Maybe I be orienting this stuff differently from you. I was thinking the shorty drill press became the driven end, and the extension the tailstock. I also considered using the drill press as a shorty lathe.
