So long as you have the newer type quill, higher spline count then there are a few ways to go.

The options are to watch ebay and hope to find one, and know that it might not be in new condition, send yours in to be modified for in the $100 range or buy the newest version from shopsmith. The shopsmith route is expensive:

but you will have one with the newest design as of today.

Right now I know of only one guy who has modified older quills to two bearing. And he is the only one I'd trust. He also does the older quills(less spline count), both options can be found here:

Jacob Anderson said the difference in function of a single and two bearing quill is not worth the additional upgrade. I REPLACED mine and without and indicator I can not notice any difference either.

I've only replaced 1 single bearing quill, last summer I got one from Shopsmith. Mine had a dust shield. With the dust shield you can juuust see it doesn't contact the walls while with the new double bearing quill you can see the bearing in action when spun. Can I notice the difference? Seems to be fewer saw marks when ripping.

Some engineer might call that a micro partial inhibitor, looks like a dust shield to me.

As far as we have ascertained the purpose of that washer is to make sure the shaft lines up the splines in to the nylon part of the drive when inserted.

OK, maybe I should have said Nick's information in the video may be incomplete. I thought I was adding some valuable info for those who might be confused by the video, as I was. All I know is I was led astray when I relied on it. Since he said the probe would go all the way in on a single bearing quill, and the double bearing quill would stop the probe at 6", when mine stopped at a couple of inches in, I knew something was fishy. I also bought a "double bearing quill" from someone who performed the test and was deceived when they hit the dust guard on their single bearing quill. Shopsmith refers you to that video when you are trying to decide whether to buy a double bearing quill. They should update the information. In the meantime, take your quill apart if you are not sure.

I have to agree that Nick's info is wrong.(at the least it is misleading)

A good look will remove all doubt. I have not seen many different 2 bearing quills, but the 'back' bearing is visible in those I have seen.

Now the single bearing quills had a spacer that helps align the splined shaft to the coupler during assembly. It may help shielding from dust, but that ain't it's purpose.

As always a clear LOOK is the best method(assuming one knows what to look for and can recognize it).

I do consider the poke method inconcise at best. Without looking, thee does not know what the poker is hitting.
