It worked well for me for many years. I only changed because I picked up a couple of
Stonghold Chucks that came with Shopsmiths I purchased.
You can save the shipping fee by buying the Barracuda chuck from amazon (see link in my previous post). You will also need an adapter similar to
this one.

SDSSmith wrote:It can be done with a faceplate but I find turning those type items easier with a scroll type chuck like
this or
this. I got many years of service from the basic barracuda chuck like this
one. Just remember that you will need to get an adapter for any chuck that will fit the 5/8" spindle on the quill.
I have a Barracuda chuck system. I love it! Turned my first (and so far - only) bowl with it a few months ago. Chucks are pricey, but I think they are worth it if you get a good one.

Im anxiouse to try the chuck out, as well as some of the other tools. so far what I have done has been a breeze.
Problem is , every time I watch a SS video I see something else that I didn't know about.

Im going to enjoy the shop this Winter.

Could you please explain how it could be used to make a jam chuck? Thanks. Hank.

I'm a guy who sold my nice scroll-chuck to help pay for my PowerPro a few years back. I keep some junk wood mounted to my 3" faceplate all the time; when it's all carved down I glue on some more.
Here was a jam-chuck I made for a quick job on a travel mug:
