Wasn't Windows 7 OK?

(PM me, and I'll send you a decent copy of W7.)

Hate to break this to you but 7 is over and so is 8.0. You might not like it but that is how MS decided to go.

I lived through vista and even refused to upgrade one of my xp machines. 7 came out and there was no upgrade path short of loosing everything on the xp machine.... Same thing will happen when 9? comes along so unless you plan to live on 7 forever.... It will end up just like my xp with no where to go.

I have a ME machine that I have a lot of my personal things on and it is no longer connected to the net. Soon that will be the fate of the xp machine.

I however do like windows 8 and windows 8.1 is an improvement so I'm happy. I'm up doing the laptop tonight.

I'm not sure why all the hate of window 8, it is very easy to learn and you can make it work pretty much like it was 7 if you want to. It is faster on both start up and shut down and even the programs for the most part run faster.

8.1 fixes a few of my preference issues and it has been stable. I have to give it a thumbs up.

I went to the store and let it download and install.

I don't have a touch screen so I've never got to play with that.

I do and have for a long time run Start Menu 8 and boot in to the screen that looks like the old operation systems. I can click a button on the start menu to go to metro and use the mouse to select what I want to do there. I look at that as an add on not that end all.

8.1 has some new version of the start button but I have not used that. I'm use to the one I have and have been very happy with it.

Ed in Tampa wrote:I'm interested to hear about windows 8.1.

From everything I hear windows 8 is a disaster and should be avoided.

The magazines say 8.1 is only marginally better.

But that does not make sense to me. I would think Microsoft was smart enough to see Windows 8 was driving people off windows and would make a change to resolve the issues.

It is as if Microsoft wants to shoot itself in the foot. But before I finalize that conclusion I'm waiting to hear from 8.1 users.
Lot of hate out there. I personally like 8 and 8.1 has fixed a few things I was not as happy as I could have been with. So for me and so far as I've only been up a few days on 8.1 it is better.

I'm a tweeter, where as I can no longer do that much on cars and motorcycles I still can on computers. I'm just thankful I can still do that. What I here about our computer future that will be going away. I understand why and yes it will be forced on us. And it is not far off now. I'm saving my hate for then.

I am still trying to get used to a 'pointing device'(mouse/touch pad).

They work well for some things, but a keyboard is better for most!

And I hate finger prints/smudges on the screen!

Ed, W7 isn't over. Heck, XP is with us for 5 more months or so.

For the last 20 years, Microsoft has been alternating on good and bad OSes.
95, good.
98 not so much.
98SE, good.
ME, worst ever.
2000, good.
XP, bad, but finally good.
Vista, tied with ME.
W7, good.
W8, again, not so much.
W8.1, haven't tried it.

Well, the alternation hasn't been perfect, but there have been quite a few stinkers.

I usually download a release candidate, to play with, before the "pay for" version comes out, and pretty much, my first look is enough, and my predictions are borne out by most of the "geeks" out there.

You can of course have your opinion but please allow me to have mine.

I was a beta tester for windows when it first came out and went through ones you didn't even mention. In the early days no one wanted anything but dos. In fact there are still hold outs who want no part of any windows systems.

The only system that I found to be a bad system was Vista. Sure the others needed some tweaks and service packs but vista just make the systems so slow.......

I like speed and that is what windows8 has over 7. I've lived with a lot of interfaces and I can adapt. I ran 7 from its release until 8 came out. It only took a few hours and I was sold on the new so out with the old and in with the new. I see no pluses for windows7 at this point.

I have no idea if any "geeks" really hate 8 and if so why. I do see a lot of people who are not "geeks" saying a lot of non-sense and it sure is popular to "hate" the new system. I mean what are they hating, no start button??? Wow that is like me saying I hate the new start button on the powerpro and I want the old on/off switch back. What people don't like is change. But some how they can figure out how to use a smart phone or a tablet and they don't hate them????? Makes no sense to me.

Sorry if I seem a little like I'm on a soap box on the subject but last week I was informed of some infrastructure changes being made by one of my old buddies from work. I didn't like what I heard. From the $$ involved it will be another one of those changes that are just making it "better" for us....

Well it has been just about 4 hours and the last updates are finishing on my laptop. It too is now windows8.1. This was a clean install with no problems. When the wife goes to check her email in the morning she will not even notice that it is different.

So I'm off to bed. Have to remember to change the manual clocks when I get up as we are now back on central time.

I'm with ED!!!! Windows 8.1 is wonderful! I can now do anything I did on XP and even more!

One click, or touch will give me all of the football scores, Pro or NCAA. Weather is also a click/touch away. So are TV schedules, this forum, the main Shopsmith site and many other services/sites. (as many as you put on the computer)

There are fewer clicks needed on Windows 8 than previous Operating Systems. It takes a lot longer to explain than to do.

One of the coolest things are the "Charms" that appear on the right side of the screen with a swipe from the right edge or a click at the bottom right corner. I particularly like the magnifying glass charm (search). I can click on that charm and type in any program I wish. Most times it only takes a few letters of the name and the proper desired program appears in app form. A simple click on that app and immediately that program is up.

If I've been on the internet and want to go back to any site I've previously used in the current session - I can run the cursor to the top left screen corner and it will show me all of the previous sites. All I have to do is click on the one I want. For example, I can now alternate between e-mail and this forum with one click.

The only disagreement I have with ED's post is I don't have a Start button and don't want one. There is a "Start Charm" but I don't use it. It's easier to press the windows key on the keayboard.
