Why 1/10 of a degree?

Doggonnit:confused: Maybe someone here can explain why it is necessary to measure angles in 10th of degrees???

I have had excellent experiences using only 1/2 degree increments. I use the "MiterPro" for all angles other than 45 degrees. The MiterPro is manufactured so we can set the miter gauge to the nearest 1/2 degree. Here is a post from 2009 where I made an 11 segment frame (just for kicks) using the MiterSet. Don't know what the angles are, but it fit together. http://www.shopsmith.net/forums/showpos ... ostcount=1

O.K. - I hardly ever rip bevels or tilt the table, but isn't the need for accuracy the same for bevels as it is for miters?

In case you are interested - here is a link to MiterSet's web page. http://miterset.home.comcast.net/~miterset/index.html

Ahh but you used the 'segment' version which produced '16.3636...' degree cuts. A 10 or 12 segment setting would have produced 18 and 15 degree cuts.

The reason for the two versions(standard/segment) is that the standard is incapable providing all the segment angles since it is only adjustable to within .5 degrees. The standard could be used for 10 or 12 segments(as well as others), but for 11(or 17 and others) could not.

For those interested in a MiterSet

I just recieved an email from my friend Dick Patee, the originator and builder of the MiterSet. Health issues will likely cause he and his wife to close the doors in the very near future. I'd suggest ordering soon.

Well, you asked, so here's my best shot. ]manufacture[/U] something like the MiterSet! The resolution might be only 1/2 degree, but the accuracy needs to be quite a bit better.

Reason #2: You want to do something unusual, like your 11-segment frame, and you don't have a special tool or instrument for the job.

Reason #3 (my personal favorite): You want to make accurate, interchangeable parts that do not require custom fitting, as per mass-production techniques. Layout measurement error is part is a part of the overall tolerance stackup, and so reducing measurement error makes it easier to hold tolerances.

If none of the above apply to a given woodworker, then they probably don't need to measure that accurately. Personally, I always try to work more precisely than the job at hand really needs, in order to learn skills that I may need someday for more challenging work.

Thanks for your answer, Dennis!:D Since I never do any manufacturing of tools for mass production, I guess I don't need that kind of accuracy. The MiterSet is a wonderful tool that does all I'll ever need and is reasonably priced.

I left the door open as to how I make 45 degree miters. - - I use Shopsmith's "Miter-Pro". So far it has been exact for cutting square corners.

Keep up the good work, Dennis! Hopefully, your skills will pay off. More power to you! Me - I'm just an old maker of homemade furniture, toys and cabinets.

That is terrible news:( , hard to read, both for the Patees and for the MiterSet. Next time you talk to Dick, please pass on my best wishes.

Will do, Charles.
I suggested that he might contact Incra to see if they'd be interested in taking over the manufacturing. Seems like a good fit.
Haven't heard back.

Took yer advice! Will arrive Tue!

Got a Thank You email from Dick that requested where I 'found out' about it! I blamed you and the forum!:D

When I originally got the SS standard Miterset, I also wanted to get the segment version also, but alas $$$$ got in the way! Now I will have them both.Image

I also told him I hoped the health issue was temporary. Hope I did not mis speak.

Is he still a member here? I think we should ALL wish them well by PM(well up to 50 of us anyway). We need to know with whom the 'issue' rests.

Way to go, JPG.
I'll let Sandi or Dick explain the health issues. Tho I can say that, sadly it's not temporary.
