I checked my digital calipers after reading this the first time. The beam markings there equal the digital display.

I assume the "0" button allows off setting. EDIT 2 Reread the blurb. Tis so!

Also the wheel is off set from the beam "0".

EDIT: Of course it is offset! The 'fence' is off set from the index!:o

Alas, the "0" button does nothing.

I'm not sure what those other two comments mean. Is the answer in there?

I'm goin to get the device and bring it back up here, to stare at until something makes sense...

You might try reading the directions. Na! They will just confuse you with facts.:D

Open it up to about an inch. Push the '0' button. What does the display read now?

The index (pointer for the beam graduations) should be off set by the amount the wheel extends from the beam referenced to the fence face.

Instructions?????:D

Aha! At it again. Whether because they want the button to not be triggered too easily or the button is just not as sensitive as the others, I must use a fingernail- vs a fingertip- to get the "0" button function to work.
When it does, and it does easily enough, all works perfectly.

Watt a relief. I like (now) the ability to 'zero' out the gauge at the beveled disc OR at the fence. And I realize there's no need for reading the beam if I'm reading the digidisplay.

Ah, so, I see that there are a couple of helpful replies since I wrote earlier.
1) I happen to be one of the rare people on earth who DOES read instructions, often before trying out the device.
2) I happen to be one of the rare people on earth who, when he says "the "0" button does nothing" not only means it but actually has good reason to say so.

Which demands my definition of 'good reason' I suppose:
The "ON" button works well and is reasonably sensitive]
