And, how does storing stuff for a few days do anything useful?
I guess in theory it would reduce trips. If there is a package going to my house today and one going a block away tomorrow, it could be combined into one trip by sitting on the first one.
I don't exactly agree with this theory though. Murphy's law states if you sit on my package for a few days, you won't get another to ship until the day after it's delivered...whether you sit on it for 1 day, or 3, or...

You pay shipping to.
You pay shipping and handling from.
So your time to get it ready to ship was worth $30.
BTW 90/60 = 1.5 = 50% markup = 33.33333% profit.

I guess all of this is correct except for the USPS stuff because losing 45K staff members, of a staff of what I think is very very inefficient. The high percentage of lazy whats for me staff will just have to wake up and work like the rest of the world.
Also i might add I like the post office and have had no problems with them except with the employes "what about of me" mine set.
And Shopsmith does use the shipping as a profit center which I do not agree with, I assure you this. I think they should cover the cost and only and pass this on to the buyer.
Rick,
I do believe that "handling" is a cost. There are far more egregious and nefarious shippers out there. I just paid $14 to Rockler to ship approx. 4 0z of product. But, that was far cheaper than driving the 150 mi to their store.

I have not a problem with shippers until the woodworking club in my community had a Grizzly table saw shipped in. The shipping company was given instructions to call before delivery so they could be guided to the shop location. They did not follow instructions and as a result the driver returned it to the shipping dock. The shipper was UPS/Overnight Transport. Came to find out that Overnight was bought out by UPS. Second delivery went OK.
The other shipment was OK. I bought a set of running boards for a new pickup which were ordered on Monday Morning at 9:00AM and they were at my house on Wednesday at 11:30 AM and on the truck before 1:00 PM. But that was an instate purchase but still good service.

I was at a party with a USPS employee at Christmas time. He is a mail carrier in the Bismarck, ND zip code. He told me that UPS and the USPS now carry each others packages. Maybe it was just a Christmas time arrangement, but he didn't say that. It was: "We got a new agreement to carry each others packages." Anyone know about that?

When you ship that headstock for $60; you are likely talking about the amount of money you handed over to the carrier.
Remember that when Shopsmith ships that same headstock through the exact same channels, Shopsmith has associated expenses called overhead and handling. Shipping and handling includes the labor to make it ready for the carrier, the packing materials required to avoid a warranty issue, the carton that it goes in and a proportioned amount of overhead (rent, utilities and taxes). Then the carriers charges get added in.
Thus 60$ vs $90.
