So how many induction motors could be obtained for $700?;)

Come on $200 is way below the actual costs and includes a profit.
But if it floats your boat add $400 and you are still way below what SS is charging. And I guarantee that $400 is way over the price of the additions plus a normal profit.
Also I'm told there are 1 million SS out there. That means there is 1 million potential customers. That is not a low volume market for most small manufactures.
If SS had priced the upgrade below the $1000 mark they would have sold a ton more than they have.

Don't have a "for sure" answer, Ed, But have some visual observations.
The motor looks to be the same, minus the belt pulley which is not an "off the shelf" item. Don't know who the manufacturer is here, but a couple of us PP owners have found off center holes in the pulleys. The pulley also has to have grooves to fit the poly "V" belt and a set screw to hole it on the shaft.
The electronics on this unit are a whole lot lighter than those in the PowerPro. Size wise, the PowerPro power units are about three times the size as this unit.
The visual controls of this unit are lacking 5 push buttons. Probably a lot of programs.
Charles
What are you basing you statement that the electronic unit is a whole lot lighter?
From the pictures? Remember this unit doesn't have to be built with the same space constraints as the SS had so the electronics can be much deeper units. My guess the electronics in this has the same reliability since Tekna is dealing directly with customer complaints on their unit. They would be crazy to go cheap in areas where they found the SS unit failed.

What I see is a whole bunch of home hobbiest mounting this unit to their lathes, drill presses and saws.
I would think the turners will jump all over this product. Shopsmith would have been smart to have negotiated with Tekna to become the US distributor.
My guess Tekna didn't like SS price point demands.

Why would Teknatool need a 'US Distributor' other than themselves?
They already offer a dvr upgrade for their lathes.

Please do not be too quick to comment on the current price of the DVR motor. This motor was offered with their Nova lathe about than 10 years ago for more than $2100. Teknatool got their new China factory built and operating about 6 years ago. Shopsmith was working with bankruptcy problems at about the same time. Teknatool knew they had an outstanding product so I was surprised that they was dealing with Shopsmith who had little money available. I understood that Shopsmith had to pay first for each PowerPro for the first few years. I understand that Teknatool retained all rights to their part of the PowerPro update at that time. I thought with the Nova DVR lathe pricing, the Shopsmith price was well within reason so Shopsmith would have a little markup. Of course, with the many DVR motors and controllers being made since then, I am sure the production costs should be be half or even less now from the original pricing.
This now makes the DVR motor costs somewhat comparable with the equitable 3 phase motor and phase converter packages being offered for larger lathes and other rotating equipment. This also makes a nice upgrade to any wood turning lathe. I fully believe they will sell quite a few of these packages in the coming years. I would believe the controller part of this package could be located away from the motor with standard plugs and cables that would be available. I believe they will have to offer a 56 motor base mount and maybe other motor mount types for this motor or if not, some else will fill this market slot.

I've found a lot of information that I had not seen before such as this about the shopsmith.
