These are indeed 'upgrades' that 'convert' to a later 'improved' model.

To be totally upfront and honest revealing those historical details is required,(and IMHO as well the only way to do so, however calling it a 520 would not be lying). I would be inclined to 'advertise' it as a 520, but divulge the history before selling it.

The bottom line is, does the upgrade have everything the 'improved' model has? Obviously the model designators(vent plate, stickers, whatever) will not be 'accurate' any more, but will reflect the true history.

Truth be told, I made up the term 'nest' to hopefully help you(and me) understand what the 'rod slots' were. Billy is as guilty as I for making words up!

The boxy shaped rail extrusions have a curved surface along the interior top surface that the connecting tubes register against when the clamping screws are tightened from the bottom of the rail.

Way too much detail for either a salesman or their audience to comprehend, hence they use and make up buzz words.

The E-bay seller is being coy! The tables are of little use without an updated carriage. Then again ignorance may be in the mix, but I doubt that considering his asking price for the carriage. Keep looking, he was a bit too high anyway. If you get a sniff of another one, PM me and I will look at it. I do snipe on e-bay(last few seconds), but not for an item after another forum member has expressed an interest here.

Interesting discussion. I have two 520's, one came new from Shopsmith that way. The other I purchased as a 510 and upgraded it. When the Power Pro was introduced I upgraded my original machine to the Power Pro. Later I was treated to a demo of the Mark 7 and decided to upgrade both machines with the Mark 7 double tilt. Not for the double tilt itself but because the new design makes for increased stability and makes it much easier to keep alignment as desired.

Even though one is truly now the Mark 7, the other it seems to me still has the old 50th Anniversary headstock so is still a Mark V with the 7 upgrade. Now if you are confused welcome to the club so am I. Jim

For those with a Mark 7 Power Pro take a look at the vent plate and it may still say that it is a Mark V.

So I guess when I put the Power Pro on my Mark 5 it will become a Mark 5.9 ?

No logical progression there! SS is not making a power pro version of a Mark 5. So it will be a Mark 5 with a power pro upgrade, or headstock as appropriate.

I still believe the same can be accomplished with a Mark 5/V.

The headrest needs to be adjusted/assembled properly(Way tubes not 'twisted').
