Where in the instructions does it say that the cylinder should be in the vertical position when disconnecting it? Installing and testing the fit, yes, but not anywhere else do I read that it needs to be vertical when removing one end?
I've only once removed it to test out the double tilt, but I removed the slip collar (mine doesn't need the small screwdriver to pry it off), raised the headstock in double tilt then returned it and reconnected the cylinder.
If it needs to be in the vertical mode, then would the procedure to use double tilt be
1. Raise the SS to drill press mode
2. Disconnect the rod end of the cylinder
3. Lower from drill press mode (without lift assist)
4. Adjust table and headstock position for router / shaper
5. Lift in to double tilt (router / shaper) and tighten the locking knob
When finished
6.Loosen the locking knob and return headstock to horizontal
7. Reposition headstock and table (or not)
8. Raise into drill press mode (without lift assist)
9. Hook up the cylinder
10. Lower from drill press position with lift assist
Because if that is the procedure, I've bypassed that when reading. Which is entirely possible,

So if as has been asserted, taking it off in horizontal position is hazardous this has been a good thing to discuss. I have to assume at this point that when it is started towards the vertical position something releases the cylinder to extend.
I would be leery of its 'releasing' when disconnecting it

That is the procedure I would use. I am not sure that the procedure is written down, but common sense (safety and practicality) would support your approach.

Okay. I guess have a new procedure. Honestly never gave the piston rod becoming a quick moving, short range jabbing device any thought.
I did look at Doug Reid's video on the double tilt and though he does not show disconnecting the lift assist, he does have it in the drill press mode before switching to the double tilt so even I can presume it was there to disconnect the rod.
At least I can move the headstock to the side where lack of strength is not such a big deal.
With the increased RPM and oomph of the PP I am planning on shaping being a fun thing.

Is it perhaps in the dual tilt/Mark 7 instructions?

Once I discovered that installing, aligning and adjusting the Lift Assist, then removing it for a plethora of alternate activities then reinstalling (etc.) it again, was more painful, annoying and back-breaking than not employing it at all, I have found the perfect solution to the PowerPro- Double Tilt- Lift Assist Accessory:
