Equipment for beginning bowl turning on a budget?

I have single bearing quill, just replace the bearing if needed and call it good. a 2 bearing quill replacement on a greenie can get pretty pricey. (a 10 ER can be less expensive and it comes standard with 2 bearing quill)

Terry are you saying an ER10 originally came with a 2 bearing quill?

That is my understanding. I don't have one personally (but I have used one before and it performed admirably). I also hear Steve (skou) brag about the ERs all the time.

Well, since my ears were burning,

I thought I'd chime in here.

I've worked on quite a few E and ER models, and NEVER have seen a single bearing quill.

There was a survey taken here a few months ago amongst owners of both models, (ER and Mark-X) and the ER came out as the best lathe, hands down. And, quite good as a vertical drill-press, too. (We won't mention the table saw, which is weak, at best.)

Oh, if your name is Jethro (NCIS) you can use yours as a drink table, too.

Name not = Jethro
I have plenty of other horizontal surfaces for holding a drink
I already have an additional lathe 1939 Dunlap 9"x 45"

I'm not shopping for an ER (no more room)

Don't forget to go through the whole alignment and leveling deal before expecting it to do a good job holding drinks.

I'm current on the NCIS Shopsmith lore.

The studio where NCIS is shot is right next door to where I work. Closed set w/high security though (as most are). We locals accept that and don't bother them.

Never seen Harmon or any of the other cast around and about either.

Lots of filming in my location.
