Although we figure expansion/contraction by using the largest movement - tangential, I have not seen a truly flat grained board since seeing wide boards sawn from LARGE trees.

Most flatsawn boards that are now available have at least one edge that is truly rift grain. Sometimes both edges and sometimes the edges are quartersawn grain. This happenstance really reduces the calculated flatsawn movement.

You guys are just a warehouse of knowledge. That is a very true statement. That idea was wandering through my empty head as well, but didn't know if it was part of the equation or not.

Okay, what type of wood, it makes a difference, is the end grain sealed, makes a big difference. My cherry end tables and coffee tables I made are at least that wide and no way is there 3/8" variation in seasonal changes. I dont even consider moister expansion when I build some thing and never had noticeable expansion, let alone a problem. I have done ship lap joints on some backs of pieces, but that was for ease and looks.
I am adding here, "edit" I think your #s are wrong, if I remember right they figure 1/8" average per foot of width as a general #, not a 1/4", and if it does it will happen first and most at the end grain area. That is one reason some, when gluing up panels use a "spring joint" to help alleviate that and help prevent any future possible "checking".
Now go to the shop and do something physical, and do away with the hypothetical stuff!!!!!!!!!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!
