I've always had a thing for wooden music stands and plan on making one someday. I never thought of making it like an old style lap desk on legs, that is brilliant!

The details are great and deserve larger photos. Can you post some off-site so they're large enough to see really well?

I'm excited about that spiral cutting approach. I carved a bench screw by hand (2 1/2 inches by 30 inches, 2 threads per inch). It was fun but SO much work - did make a jig to help saw the main line but didn't have any power tools. Now I can make another much more easily, but even better, that rope spiral is beautiful.

Thanks for all the kind comments, makes one feel very good!:) Boy this forum is a shot to the ol' ego. But then it's back to the shop where you measure twice and stilll cut it short and it's back to earth.

A 'safer' way(for those paranoid) to pass on an e-mail address is to use the Private Message feature of this forum.

One can enable e-mails through the forum directly so another member can send one without actually knowing the e-mail address of the recipient.

Then actual e-mail address can be exchanged either through the PM or or by using the address(es) revealed in the PM(s) when replying.

Access to the e-mail link is on your profile page. Setting it on is located on the options screen.

However since you are obviously not paranoid(after all it is in your signature line) this is for the benefit of those who are.

That's a very good point. For one thing, spam companies use programs to rapidly and cheaply scour the web for addresses. One they find posted is one they know will work. I suggest you edit it out.

I've mostly made things with hard maple and oak bought by the linear foot from Borg's. Or reclaimed old furniture. Managed some decent stuff but it's limiting. I got the SS initially for the bandsaw in order to be able to better breakdown rough lumber bought by the bf. I have no real sense of how much a project takes.... Hence my question: how much wood would you say it took for the project? If I may ask, how much time and money did the project take? Got all sorts of one (time, luckily) And very little of the other. A bit off topic, hope that's OK.

Thanks. Yeah I thought about this, but as you say, I'm not paranoid about this forum. Also, that is not my private email address, but one I started with years ago that AOL spams the hell out of anyway. I was going to end it, but then thought I needed an address for all the places that sell email addresses. I only share my private email with family and friends.

The project used 10 bd. ft. of Walnut at $7.50/bd' = $75.00 plus MN tax of $12.50 = $87.50. The 2.6 bd' of pine I had in inventory as with the small amount of Lace wood and so cost nothing as regards this project. It took approximately 1 week to make at 4 hours per day = 28 hours. The cost of Minwax Wipe-on Poly Urethane was $12.50. The Shellack I had in stock, but runs about $30/pound dry flake. It was a darker Button Lac which eliminated the use of stain. It maybe took a pint of Shellack. Hard to estimate a cost here. The green flocking kit cost $14.25 at Woodcraft - http://www.woodcraft.com/search2/search ... 20supplies.

Thus a rough total cost of $115.00 is what I come up with. If you pay yourself $20/hr. which is cheap really, you come up with a manufactured price of $675.00, and of course this doesn't include the thousands of dollars in equipment or electrical cost. One can quickly see why quality all wood furniture costs as much as it does.
