Against these same concerns, I went through with it. For how I use the machine the benefits make sense. I had hoped that I could simply clearence the table support for the track, but there is a rib directly in the way. The track could be shortened, but that's part of the fun of the VII. So, I'm limited on table placement. And tilt. And...
In this pic the table still has about two inches before hitting the track.

I wish a 50 buck VII would show up here, I really would like to have one.

I'm finding out that they're not wanted that much...I'm into rebuilding Shopsmith's rather than parting them out. So one of the Mark VII's that I've completely rebuilt (new belts, bearings, paint etc. the speed cam is like new and gear rack is like new) and want to pass on has hardly gotten a response on Craigslist. I'm asking $600 or B.O. which is high but compared to some of the junk that I've seen posted, it's pretty reasonable considering that it's been totally gone through and everything is like new.
