I am with JPG! I have used pulleys with keyways and no key, no problem.

Ignore the keyway.

I agree ignore the key way.
The only time it would come into play is if the pulley was revolving on the shaft, but since it is fixed with set screw ignore it.

The keyway(s)/key 'prevent' rotation on the shaft.

That is also the purpose of the flat(as well as to provide an area for the set screw to bite into the shaft without making it impossible to remove due to the burr created.

DUH!

I was talking about using the pulley that had a keyway cut into it on an axle. I would think the edges of the keyway could cut into the axle or become a low spot on the rotating axis of the pulley.

That is why they are 'narrow'.;)

Seriously, you guys rock.

I'm going to stick with JPG on this one and, for now, ignore the keyway. However, I may cut a wider thread into the pulley and install a wider set screw with a flattened bottom to maximize contact with the flat on the shaft, just because I'm paranoid.

Solve this problem the easy way and go to MKC Tools and get a ER headstock or motor pulley that is a perfect fit.
LDH
