tomsalwasser wrote:Thanks Ron. Great channel. One tip I offer when viewing youtube. If you click on the gear wheel you can speed the video up to 1.25, 1.5 and 2 times normal speed. Sometimes this is handy to get all the information from a video in half the time. As needed you can slow it back down to catch important details.
Thanks for the tip, the speed up options don't show up on my computer, :( (Ubuntu 14.4, Firefox), it must be graphics card or browser dependant, but I'm sure it will be of use to others.

Doesn't show either on my win 8.1 FireFox 37.0.1.
Nor in Win 7 FF 37.0.1.

Hi John. I just noticed this, sorry for the late reply. I did a screen print of the gear wheel. I typed the words "GEAR WHEEL" on the screen print to point out where it is. If you click the link below you will see my screen print. Do you not see the gear wheel when you are in youtube?

Thanks Tom, but all that gives me is a quality setting.

Looks like Fire Fox is a common thread here. I use Chrome. Perhaps the feature is only available if you use Chrome?

I just checked again and it is there now with the speed option. Now using FF 37.0.2. Maybe it was an issue with FF 37.0.1 which I was using before.

Oh good, sounds like there's hope. It's a handy feature. Many youtube videos have too much bla bla bla that slow them down (mine included lol).

Windows 7 Profesional with Service Pack 1 and Firefox 37.0.2.

I just tried on my wife's computer with Windows 8.1 (Uck Uck Uck) and it works there also with FF.

Is it working now Bob? Chrome is a free download if you were curious to try it.

Just wanted to revive this thread to report a discovery I made. :D
Lately I had been having a lot of trouble with Adobe Flash crashing while watching YouTube videos. (Firefox browser running on Ubuntu Linux)
A bit of research uncovered the fact that Adobe had stopped making new versions of Flash for Linux at some point in the past and had only been providing security updates for the old version. :(
A bit more research revealed that Firefox could play videos using the built in HTML5 and the solution was to disable the Adobe Flash plugin. :D

Videos are now playing without crashing, and as an added bonus the faster/slower speed settings are now available in the YouTube Settings (Gear icon) menu.

So the ability to vary playback speed is available in Firefox (thank you Tom for bringing this to our attention).
If it isn't showing up it is the fault of the Adobe Flash  plugin and the solution is to disable it.
