Well, now I am sufficiently enlightened. The beauty of this entire forum is the opportunity it provides to keep learning. Thanks!

An interesting thing I found out. I added a live end to my lathe. The lathe I added it to turned the opposite direction, counterclockwise. The ring that holds the bearing together is a counterclockwise thread and will become unscrewed. I needed to add locktight to the threads. Don't know how long that's going to hold.

Robert, I think you ought to rethink this fix. I believe you are begging for an incident!:(

This fix was not on the Shopsmith. It was on the Legacy Mill that turns the opposite direction.

This has nothing to do with Shopsmith, but none of us want to see another human mangled by flying metal.

Crafter's Station help

I need some help. I just bought a Crafter' Station without knowing anything about it...I know stupid. It looks like it has been used very little. at $200.00 it seemed like a good deal. It has a band saw, table saw, disc sander, half-inch chuck and extentions for the tables. The manual is missing. I see that there are two switches which indicate which to use for which tool. With one off, I try the other and it kicks my power off each time in my garage. Both switches do this. The motor is not frozen and I have tried it with the tention on the belt and off. I tried with a tool attached and with none.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
gary

Hi Gary,
This may sound obvious, but it sounds like you've got yourself a short. I wood try tracing all of the wires looking for a place that wood cause a short. The following suggestion may sound dangerous and it is if you are not careful, but you could try bypassing the switches and provide electricity directly to the motor. If you still "pop" your circiut breaker, I wood think that the short is inside the motor. If that is the case, take the motor to a repair shop.

One switch turns the motor on and off, the other reverses the rotation of the motor. If the machine is blowing circuits, you have a dead short in the system and I would suggest you unplug it before you actually meet stupid.
Two possible courses of action:
1. Find a reliable electric motor service have the motor tested; than have the same person rebuild and rewire the motor and switches.
2. Send it back to us and let Dr. Shopsmith (Su Powell) see if she can save the patient.

With all good wishes,

Thanks Tim for the reply. It does make sense that it is a short. Perhaps that is why it looks so new. :-)
I'll let you know how things turn out.

Gary
