IIUC, the control sheave is a goner. A broken quadrant gear is unusual, but seems consistent with your description of it breaking down.

With that kind of damage to the quadrant gear, the arms that it attaches to and pivots are likely at least bent. If they can be returned to normal, ok.

The arms where the quadrant gear attaches to the speed control bracket appears fine to me. Not having anything to compare it to it seems to fit the arm correctly and I can screw the arm in and out to its fullest extent with ease. Now I admit that I have nothing other than my own observation to base that on.[/b]

can you explain first what pieces we are up grading and who Bill Mayo is? Forgive my ignorance, I am not sure what you mean by the "tension pivot pin shaft"

Bill Mayo is a member here that contributes much knowledge here. He also repairs Mark5's and others. He's come up with a way to keep the porkchop from uneven wear.

Those pictures help a lot thanks. I know I need "I" the control sheave assembly. I also need at least H the quadrant assembly. Looking at that, mine sheared off right where the metal pin that holds the spring goes through the arm. The bracket that holds the arm really looks as if it is fine. The remaining piece of the arm with the teeth moves well and freely, no broken or even chipped teeth. The bracket does not look bent in the slightest. So likely I will buy only the quadrant assembly and not the bracket.

I found many years ago that a bolt replacing the roll pin to hold the quadrant will keep the speed control bracket arm from bending. I have offered this improvement for many years without any negative feedback. Contact me off-line if more questions. The results of no oiling or insufficient oiling of the headstock causes most of these speed control problems. Thanks.

I have seen your upgrade kit on ebay and likely will be buying one.

Looking on eBay I see that they sell the control sheave assembly bearing. My control sheave itself seems fine it is just missing the bearing and the clip. Is it advisable to buy this replacement and put it in my sheave or am I asking for trouble.

That would depend upon the condition of the control sheave at the end where the bearing goes.

Do you have the loop/clip and roll pin?

I have it all but its not in great shape. The sheave itself looks fine to me. I will try to take a picture of it and post it. The bearings I see on ebay come with the bearing and pin and clip etc.
