Another 10er Craigslist question

I bow to JPG in all things ShopSmith, but I would grab that. It is ready to go out of the box (so to speak LOL) and has some extras. IMHO, it is worth it.

As others have 'lamented', they be cheaper in the 'south east'.

Correct me if I am wrong, but can't you regularly spend 350 on just a speed changer. I would buy the machine just for that as I am wanting a speed changer for mine. (no DC thank you very much)

I was shopping for a speed changer a couple years ago. At the time, they usually sold for $125-150 on eBay. I bided my time, and after some months, four or five were listed at the same time, and I was able to to snipe a nice one for $70.

A year or so after that, a 10E with a speed changer came up locally on Craigslist for $140. I snapped it up, but that deal was not as good as it sounds. I had to get new speed-changer sleeve bearings, but those were only about 20 bucks. Much more costly, the machine also needed spindle bearings, motor and headstock pulleys, and a driveshaft for the headstock. Some idiot had beat on the driveshaft and pulleys with a hammer.

I am just about to unveil my 36 inch 10ER based drum sander. Waiting for paint for the dust collector (Verde green of course). A speed changer would be handy for this SPT, although the sander has exceeded my expectations with the three speeds available .....

Are you in your twenties or an old geezer like me? I put buying things off most of my life watching for super bargains (and I found a lot of them) but these days if I see something I really want I buy it so I can start enjoying it right away.
I often think of a multimillionaire (as in much more than a couple) friend of mine who has also been very frugal all of his life. He and I share an interest in old 2 wheel Gravely garden tractors and often chat about them when me chance to meet. Maybe a couple of years ago we were talking and he was telling me about this Gravely he had looked at. He had really kind of wanted it but the seller wanted $200 for it and he felt that it was maybe 20% too high. We are around the same age, he maybe be a few years older. My point being that people are funny about what they will spend for. I had an uncle that always wanted a decent woodshop and he was good at doing that kind of work. He would spend for a new car now and then and other things but he didn't even buy a table-saw until after he was about 80 and it was quite old and very small. He bought a few other small tools but never used them before his health failed. He just kept putting it off waiting for the right deal...

Well it's 200 miles away but that's not all too far. I'm in Austin and drove that far and back to get my 520 with DC, bandsaw, jointer. The older I've gotten (I'm 52) the more I've decided not to worry too much about a few extra bucks here and there. On the other hand, I have plenty to do with what I have and the 10er is mostly a temptress.

Trying to save a bit for a vacation this summer with the sweetie which is what holds me back, as well as a garage that is just now enjoyable again after "The Great Tool Clean Out of 2015" during which I sold all the single tools and consolidated to the SS.

If it were local, I would have probably bought it by now. I may yet.

When I was "buying" we would make mini-vacations out of the road trips. We live south of Indianapolis and made a number of trips around the eastern US. A pickup trip to Springfield Mass. included a side stop at Niagara Falls among a few other stops. A pickup trip to Charlotte NC included a loop to visit family near Chattanooga TN. and a couple of other stops. A pickup trip to the southern tip of Missouri included an antique tractor parts pickup in the southern tip of IL and a visit with friends in Evansville IN. We made a bunch of side trips and always took one route there and another back home, sometimes a couple of states different. Nothing says that you can't pull into a motel or nice restaurant while hauling a Shopsmith or two...

If I was close I'd be tempted. The speed changer alone, if good, often sells for $100. The jig saw is worth a few bucks. The steel legs and retractable wheels are another plus. And it looks clean! I think it would be a good use for $350. My 10ER has been in the family since 1952 and has worked just about every year of its' life. So you know they can last forever.

Rusty 10er but it has the speed changer and he only wants 45 for it. Ad reads only:
"Going going gone Shopsmith $45 Will scrap next week"
But has photos.
I'm not near Sacramento but it shows up in the not quite nearby results.
If I were id get it for parts, just so I could tell my wife I needed to buy a decent 10er to fix my rusty one of course I'd have to put it on my side of the bed and sleep on it. We are so running out of room, especially since I brought a Delta DC home. No, really sweety. It's supposed to be that dirty! (Just outside front door till I clean it and make a path)
