Just a clarification- Shopsmith sells aluminum oxide sanding belts for the belt sander up to 320 grit.

I had not noticed that, thanks for posting.

Like Dusty, I have never used the belt sander to flatten sharpening stones.

I doubt it would be successful except for very severe cavitation on older(softer) stones and doubt a flat surface would be the result. The belts are too soft/flexible.

I read your initial post just prior to leaving town for a few days. Sorry I could not respond then.

The belt sander is intended for use in rapid material removal(shaping) so finer grits are inconsistent with that.

I purchased my belts a couple of years ago, and I didn't think they did at that time, or I was just confused with the disc sander because they only go to about 120/150 there depending on the type. Sorry for the misinformation.

I use this for flattening stones. I'ts kinda pricey but works fast and does an awesome job.
I had many stones in need of attention so I dug down a bit deeper in my pockets and
I got one of these. I'm pleased with the results I get with it.
