So I decides to take the plunge and upgrade my wife's HP All in One to Win 10. I clicked on the Reserve your free upgrade button and it came back and said it is reserved and I will be notified when the download is ready. That was three days ago. How long does it take?

That seems to be a big variable. Mine came back the same day and started without intervention from me. Unfortunately it did not install properly and I am back in the download mode.Started the download 7minutes ago and I am now at 6%. That is a lot faster than the last time. The first download took almost 7 hours and then did not install properly. 7 % now.

Completed 40% of the download in just over 1 hour (9:27AM to 10:29 AM). Much much faster. Hope that is a good sign.
Previous download took something like 5-6 hours. This time it looks like it is going to be 2.5+ hours.
I don't know what I really want to happen. This morning when it failed and then restored to W7, my comment to myself was GOOD. At least I am back where I want to be.
Then I kick off a new download. You tell me!

This down load has gone well, so far. It is progressing at the rate of about 10% every 15-16 minutes and has done this throughout the download. Previous download was very sporadic and took about twice as long. Hopefully this is a good sign. I'll know in a short while. It is 94% right now. Gotta go watch it to see what happens.

My installation (from Windows 7) took just over 90 minutes and seemed to go smoothly, but I found that several files (documents and photos) disappeared from my hard drive in the process. Fortunately I had backed up everything important beforehand, so no harm was done. Although the great majority of installations I have read about seem to have avoided this problem, I highly recommend backing up any truly irreplaceable files. It may turn out to be a waste of time, but (like with power tools) better safe than sorry.

The second down load went well but the installation failed (at about the same point) again. The machine has been restored to the" going in state".
I probably should never have tried this. I knew from the start that my machine is old (and an old configuration). I had my doubts that it would evel qualify for the free download though it did.
I'll wait awhile (toward the end of the free offer) and MAYBE try again. In the meantime, I have one machine operating well on XP and this one that is now back to Windows 7. I am content. Just thank right now that I recovered to this point.
My daughter has a middle aged Gateway that controls her embroidery machines that she has replaced. I'll be getting that one day in the near future. Maybe then Windows 10 will look good again.

If it failed twice at the same point installing drivers, you have something in your hardware that is no longer compatible and supported in Windows 10. Sometimes installs like this give you a log you can look at to help determine what driver failed. If you can identify the failure, you can consider replacing that part of the computer if it is a separate part, (not part of the mother board).
Or, the best way it to keep your existing computer as-is and if you really want a Windows 10 computer, go out and buy a new one that has fully supported hardware.

This is good and valid feedback. What is confusing to me is that the Windows 10 Upgrade Assist tells me that the hardware is compatible to Windows 10 AND the system works in Windows 7 and XP so the drivers (it seems to me) are all in place.
Bottom line: I have dodged the bullet twice and I am NOT going to challenge it again. Windows 7 works for me (does everything that I need) and I am going to live with that. For the time being, Microsoft is not going to gain a Windows 10 convert.
The option to do so remains on my desktop just in case something happens to change my mind.
Through all of this battle I have gained at least one thing. I have a dual boot system now. I don't know how it happened but I have ended up with both XP and Windows 7 on this computer. Furthermore, I have two avenues by which I can employ Microsoft Office (two different vintages at that).

Just because Upgrade Assistant tells you the hardware is compatible, that doesn't mean it is. Software is often wrong. That is what is called a bug, and likely this is a bug that Microsoft isn't aware of yet, or even if they are aware, they don't know how to fix it right now. Either way, it doesn't matter because it won't work, and unless you find the install log if it exists, and scan it carefully for what went wrong, it probably isn't going to be fixed.
Your idea to leave it alone is the best idea.
Remember, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. Don't upgrade if things are working. Upgrade if something doesn't work.

Great recommendation!
I have a win 8.1 machine. Designed for that operating system. \
Today I started downloading Win 10. After 2.5 hours of the download checking my upgrades (there have been 240+ all security upgrades) I gave up and stopped the process.
Enough - already! BTW the download was hard to get rid of.
