Dovetail joint would have gotten a patent. Thankfully those create a monopoly for "only" 20 years. Disney keeps pushing for legislation to extend length of copyright when the copyright on the original mickey mouse nears running out. Right now copyright is lifetime of creator plus 50 something years (or 70?) after death...

so on this whole topic I researched and learned somethings!!! Da!! My son and Bro in Law are attorneys, sorry to say!! It is not there areas of law expertise, but there uptake, so Jo Blow unknown to him/her infringes on there rights, they are on them like fruit flies, reason is, if not, someone who does really exploits them, and goes to litigation, and the exploiter learns that they let the unknown go by, it gives them leverage/discrimination in court on there exploitation.

An idea is not copyright-able, but an implementation of that idea is.

Illegal:
-- Copyrighted logos or characters. Teams, Harley Davidson, and Disney will eat you up.
-- Duplicating a copyrighted product exactly

Legal but worth searching your own soul over:
-- A work-alike (not clone) version of a unique product someone developed and is making a living making.

Looney Tunes is owned by Warner Bros., but the point is still valid.
