FWIW, I believe the switch 'barrel' is 15/32, not 1/2.

Have you ever seen a switch advertised to have a 15/32" barrel?

I can't say for sure if I've seen them "advertised" that way, but both dimensions are correct. Here is the part drawing from the datasheet for the switch that I suggested a couple of posts back. Note the 15/32-32 thread callout. It's an industry standard.
I used the parametric search engine at Digikey.com to find a suitable switch. With it, you can filter either by panel cutout size OR by bushing thread size.

I have looked at those, I like the idea, it is almost 20 bucks by the time I get it in my hand. I though I could do better, but like I said I don't care what it costs, I just want it to last. The specs are good!

But the recommended cutout is .500" which was really my point though poorly stated it was.

15/32 is for clearance in the 16/32 (1/2") hole.
