Here is what I have. Model? SN 360194

I turned the speed down to the slowest last night. Seemed to be ok.
I tried to turn it back up to fast to do the oiling. It would not work.
Further investigation found this:
The teeth on the speed ctl handle are toast.

A few of the teeth on the idler gear are not good.
So, those need to be replaced.
When I move the speed ctl dial it just spins.
Where do I go from here?

Make sure the handle is right on the with the set screw fully engaged. My recent mark v had worse teeth than that and it can still work if the set screw is fully engaged, may not be able to see the speed though. But it should get you to high speed to lube it.

Greenie Mark 5
Gilmer drive
The knob(with stripped teeth) can be repaired better than new. *

The outer dial does nothing except rotate as an indicator.
The shaft the knob attaches to actually moves the internal quadrant gear(porkchop) to move the control sheave that alters the speed.
I assume you discovered the set screw that retains the knob to the shaft.
Do NOT turn the knob unless the internal pulleys re rotating(under power or manually).
Excellent condition(other than the knob teeth). I think the idler gear is usable.
* The choice is yours re the knob, but if you request it, 'grany' will return 'yours'(it will add turn around time) or get a new one from SS. IMHO the repaired knob with steel gear teeth is superior.
'next', remove the speed control(three screws and the clip from the control sheave to the porkchop) and take a pix of the teeth on the porkchop. Make sure the small spring under the outer dial does not 'disappear'.

Is this really just cosmetic?

Is this shaft the worm ctl shaft?
Are those the teeth I need a pic of?

Is the spring you are talking about the spring washer(pn 90)
or the dial spring(pn 83)?
Thank you! so much for all this information.

THINK IT AS A SPEEDOMETER CONNECTED TO THE THROTTLE, NOT THE WHEELS

YES

NO - THE TEETH ON THE PORKCHOP

73

ok.......slowly coming up to speed w/the Shopsmith nomenclature.
Will keep an eye out for spring 73.
Is it under the plate? Not visible until the plate comes loose?
Should that plate just slide off?

Should that plate just slide off? FALLS OFF WHEN THREE SCREWS ARE REMOVED

I have now. Thank you!
Can I still take this apart even if the control
will not go up to the fastest?
I also did a quick perusal of the academy videos.
Next will be the 57min inspection.

It is easier if set to fast. If the speed control is loose, getting the control sheave and porkchop separated is even easier. The intent 're set to fast' is to get the porkchop fully retracted from the control sheave so the clip will slide off.
FWIW, the admonition re 'DO NOT ADJUST THE SPEED CONTROL UNLESS RUNNING' is applicable to LOWERING the speed since the belts must adjust to the squeezing by the control sheave.

Trouble in River City.
Looks like the porkchop is cooked.

The worm ctl shaft has seen better days and the
snap ring is bent and does not seat.

I'm going to replace the porkchop, worm ctl shaft, snap ring and the roll pin.
I think the bracket is ok.
It has the original power cord and it is going to be replaced
along w/a new switch. A set of casters to get this bad boy on the move.
