What are you guys using for scanned software?
ddub,

I don't yet have a scanning system as I don't yet have a need. So far, everything I've done has come from Thingiverse models. My main project right now uses parametric lego-like models that I customize in OpenSCAD.

I see prices and capabilities all over the place for 'hobbyist' units. The Makerbot Digitizer runs $799 but Amazon reviews are horrid. A recent open source product , the Atlas 3D kit (http://store.murobo.com/atlas-3d-kit/), is around $225 excluding printed parts and seems to be actively improving at this time; I'm going to keep an eye on this project since the price is so low. I do believe any of these typically require some amount of cleanup on the model after the scan, i.e., no quick and simple scan and print solutions.

Looks like there are some even cheaper options using Kinects and various free software. KScan3D has recently been re-released as free software and looks interesting. Probably best option is to find a used Xbox 360 Kinect for $20-30 plus ~$10 for USB adapter.

I actually miss typed, I would need a 3D scanner AND software.

I can only currently scan on a flat bed.

That is what I see as a potential problem. Currently I have used some scans to create a file to cut vinyl. You have to convert the scan to a vector file. I am green at it, and who knows if I am doing it the best/fastest way and I have only used one software. But so far, I have spent a couple of hours on each scan that I have done. And that is a single dimension not 3D....

Kinnect and k scan is surprisingly a good set up. The newer kinnect from the Xbox 1 works better. Much note affordable option for laser scanning.

There is no quick way to do it like Roy said. Any scan is going to have stray points.. Especially if you use a less standardized set up.

Yes it did. The great thing how it turned out is that it is silent. Think it was too porous.

Blow harder! The pea is likely too light.
