nuhobby,

Close only counts in hand grenaids so long as you have room on the underside for nuts and washers when required. As long as you don't take out a rib the tables integrity will not be spoiled.

Grandpa used to tell me that close counted in horse shoes also.

jim bandy,

Are you telling me that I should attempt to drill into the rib and that I should not try to avoid it.

Can you explain why?

For those that upgrade from the 500 to the 510 or 520, Shopsmith offers a drilling guide for the shaper fence casting. Maybe they have a shaper fence drilling guide for those who "downgrade".

The 500 casting has a hole on one end and a slot on the other end. If by chance yours has these, then you only need to get the table clamps, bolts and washers from Shopsmith to mount the fence to your 500. Good luck.

dusty if u look the ribs meet a flat spot. if u call ss cust. suport they will send u a template guide to drill the hole . mine landed on the flat spots not on the ribs itself. i believe ss did there homework on the change over when they made the 510/520 tables . i had no problem drilling holes .have use shaper many times . no problem setting up.

Success!

Post by nuhobby »

Well, I did get up the nerve and bored 2 new 3/8"-dia. holes (12 in apart) on my old 500 table. They were just inside some underside aluminum ribbing sections.

I used a set of toilet-tank brass bolts & nuts to mount my 510 shaper fence on the 500 table. I cut them down in length so they permitted the table to go to 90-degree (drill press) orientation without hitting the legs or tie-bar.

First thing I tried was something I believe I saw mentioned on this forum months ago: I set up the Sanding Drum with the fence-halves dialed far enough out to make only the grit-portion of the sanding drum protrude. So I had a very miniature "Sand Flee" and it worked great!
