I wish I could remember which link it is in the Sawdust Sessions. Nick capped then filled a PVC tube with water, placed the rusty tubes from a shopsmith inside with the water, then cut up some potatoes and capped the top.
Two weeks later he had some smelly water but the rust came off the tubes pretty easily.
I'm hoping it wasn't an April fools joke...cuz my tubes are soaking right now.
(JK, my tubes are on the machine)
AHHHH I see the link Bettyt44720 posted has the link in it.
Enjoy!

I just acquired real old 1955 Magna ShopSmith, It appears that it has been sitting idle s while. The tubes are rough and rusty. Are the newer ShopSmith way tubes chrome or nickle plated? I have just started the restoration. Will the 510 or 520 way tubes fit my 500.
I hope I didn't post this in the wrong place, if I did I am sorry.

Hi bigmoe,
Sorry, I am not able to answer your nickle/chrome question. Maybe someone else can, but I will assure you that this
is the proper place to post your queston!:D

You may also want to check
http://www.ssug.org for this tube-steel topic.
Way tubes (the upper tube pair) even from the 50's often are in pretty good shape; they were high-nickel steel construction. Probably new Way Tubes are different than the 50s era, but still new Way tubes will be more durable (over several decades) than new Bench tubes.
Bench tubes (the lower tube pair) aren't quite as over-built; they have fewer functions in the overall integrity of the machine. Also, SS notes that bench-tubes have changed diameter slightly from the 50s designs to the post-1972 designs. See for instance they have 2 models of Lift Assist to fit the 2 eras. It's worth checking to be sure. I worked on a basket-case 1956 Mark V last year and ended up silver-painting the lower tubes because they were way pitted.
Good luck,
