The seat portion, will likely be milled out of 4/4 kiln dried hard maple and the remaining portions will be white oak.

Check your local Craigslist. Here in Central Ohio, a search for "maple boards" or "maple lumber" will usually return a couple of small sawmills with a good selection of local hardwoods at very reasonable prices.

And after I do this, the plans for this project will be sent from NC, to PA, free of charge!

So what is it?

I'm in NY which is right next to PA. So won't you please give us the plans? I do quite a bit of leather work and a stitching horse is just what I need. Also, the seat would be great on a see-saw I'm making for my grand-daughter.

I never followed through. I am in a particular thin time, in spending money, so this too, shall need to wait. So, I do not have the plans!

Like many tools it has several names... Stitching horse, stitching pony... Here in Central Indiana I always heard them called "Harness maker's vise". I never owned one but in 20+ years of owning a shoe repair shop I did a good bit of hand sewing. I only did a little twin needle sewing. Never did "hog bristle" sewing except using fine tag wires. I did do quite a bit of "lock stitch" hand sewing with a bobbin type hand stitcher. Of course 98%+ of my sewing was by various machines.
Boot zippers... God I hated boot zippers. The money was too good to turn them away but I hated them. Normally used the Singer 29-K70. They were about as much fun as hand sanding a big complex wood project.
My wife did a little machine sewing but I did all of the hand sewing.

BTW, if you do a Google image search on harness makers vise you will see a wide variety of them, mostly old originals.
