I have done it many times, and I did it once with bit on top of the wood on the table. It soared through the SS very fast.
Then I built aux table the mounts on the main table it is approximately twice as high off the main table as the diameter of the bit. That allows total adjustability.
I have a fence mounted on the aux table and align it to the arbor using the fence against the far right side of the table or with miter gauge against front to edge of the table.
As I said it works fine and I'm using it on a slower 520.
I will admit I now do it on my router table with the bit vertical.
