Thanks all, his data was backed up and also had a lot of it on another computer as well.
The laptop is worth keeping. You just need to wipe Windows 8 from it and start over. If he has other computers, it is likely that his important files are on them as well as on this one.
Just do a clean install of whatever operating system you want. It might be a good time to try Windows 10 on it.
